Laser & Light-based Services |
At the Pennsylvania Centre for Dermatology, we offer only safe, scientifically sound, and evidence-based laser and light-based technologies to treat a variety of skin conditions.
All laser and light-based procedures rely on the principle of selective photothermolysis. It is well known that certain structures - such as blood, melanin, water, and collagen - preferentially absorb certain wavelengths of light. By utilizing devices that emit light at specific wavelengths (Lasers) or specific ranges of wavelengths (Intense Pulsed Light devices), we can preferentially target unwanted structures, while leaving the healthy overlying and surrounding skin intact.

Laser Hair Removal With several laser and light-based devices, we can effectively treat all skin types and body areas, including tanned skin. With a long pulsed Nd:Yag laser, we can treat patients with dark skin tones. We also have an intense pulsed light device that makes treating large body areas (such as the back), much faster and with less discomfort.
Laser Tattoo Removal: The removal of tattoos is an extremely difficult process that requires tremendous experience and a varity of laser devices. Each ink color responds best to different types of lasers. We have access to three q-switched lasers that are speficially utilized only for tattoo removal. Success typically depends on the color of the tattoo, the skin typce of the patient, and the quality of the ink from the inital tattoo.

Leg Vein Therapy: Now, men and women alike are making unsightly leg veins a thing of the past. No more painful injections! With the most advanced technology, a unique design, and longer laser wavelengths, we can safely and effectively treat both tiny superficial red veins and deeper blue leg veins on men and women of all skin tones.
Rosacea and Facial Redness: Rosacea is a condition characterized by redness (flushing) in the central portions of the face (cheeks, chin, and nose). Intense pulsed light and laser treatments are extremely effective at eliminating visible blood vessels, reducing flushing, and minimizing general background ruddiness. Dr. Crawford has published widely on this topic, and he has successfully treated hundreds of patients with this troubling condition.

Sun Spots & Discoloration: With the broad array of laser and light devices at the Pennsylvania Centre for Dermatology, we can treat a variety of colored skin lesions (sun spots, spider vessels, tattoos, facial redness, rosacea, red/pink scars, and poikiloderma).
Acne Scarring: Patients are often interested in treating depressed, ice-pick, and rolling scars resulting from facial acne. Once the acne is appropriately treated and under good control, there are several available treatment options. In general, a multimodality approach produces the best results. Some of these approaches include subcision procedures, punch elevations/ grafts, local acid application (trichloroacetic acid in the "CROSS" technique), filler injections, dermabrasion, and fractional laser resurfacing procedures. All of these techniques and technologies are available at the Pennsylvania Centre for Dermatology.

Botox® Cosmetic is a simple, nonsurgical, physician-administered treatment that can smooth moderate to severe frown lines between the brows, creases in the forehead, and “crows’ feet” around the eyes. One 10-minute treatment—a few tiny injections—and within days there's a noticeable improvement that can last from four to six months. And there’s no recovery time.
Fractional Laser Therapy repairs wrinkled or damaged skin with minimal downtime by promoting fast and natural healing. Restore the healthy skin of your youth and gain a renewed sense of confidence with this safe, non-invasive procedure. This procedure offers the ability to smooth wrinkles and acne scars, improve texture and pore size , and rejuvenate the neck, chest and hands.

Chemical Peels involve the use of a chemical solution, such as glycolic acid, to improve and smooth the texture of the facial ski. Your physician will choose a solution and concentration based on your skin and the desired effects. Most peels involve very little discomfort or downtime ("lunch time peel"). However, you and your provider may decide to pursue more agressive and deeper peels for more dramatic results. Glycolic acid peels are an important part of skin rejuvenation regimens, in combination with sun protection and appropriate skin care products such as Renova (tretinoin), Avage (tazarotene), or those containing alpha hydroxy acid (AHA).

RESTYLANE® is a gel that is injected into the skin in tiny amounts with a very fine needle. Restylane® can be used for smoothing out folds and wrinkles, lip enhancements and shaping facial contours. Restylane® is a crystal-clear, non-animal, biodegradable gel, consisting of hyaluronic acid, which is a natural substance already present in your body. Once in the skin, Restylane® works by creating volume. The result is instantaneous and produces a long-lasting, natural enhancement, gentle and safe to your skin.

Photorejuvenation Procedures (Photofacials) involve a series of full face, gentle pulsed light treatments intended to improve the appearance of sun damaged and aged skin. Photorejuvenation therapy can smooth uneven facial coloration, eliminate brown spots, reduce facial flushing, and erase visible blood vessels. Unlike laser treatments of old, newer treatments require no down-time and no need for anesthesia. No procedure has ever been developed that can accomplish so much with such low risk and no down-time. Photorejuvenation therapy was developed for the active, busy patient for whom time and appearance are essential.
